The Project

Working alongside Charlotte Sanderson Garden Design, M T S Gardens was appointed to deliver a new landscape around this recently renovated Georgian home. Charlotte developed the overall concept, while our team produced the detailed planting plans and undertook the construction, planting and establishment of the garden.

A series of terraces creates places to enjoy the garden throughout the day, connected by stepping stones that pass through generous herbaceous planting. Beyond, formal lawns, a tree-lined pétanque court and a productive kitchen garden bring together recreation, horticulture and family life.

Delivered in carefully planned phases, the project ultimately extended from the gardens surrounding the house to the vegetable garden and renovated driveway. Our involvement continues today through the ongoing maintenance and development of the landscape.

The Story

Following the renovation of this Georgian home, Charlotte Sanderson Garden Design approached M T S Gardens to help realise a new landscape that would reconnect the house with its rural surroundings.

Charlotte's concept established the overall structure and character of the garden, while M T S Gardens developed the planting plans and took responsibility for bringing the scheme to life.

A garden connected to the house

The first phase concentrated on the rear garden, creating a series of distinct spaces around the newly renovated property.

A morning terrace provides a quieter place to enjoy the garden earlier in the day, while a larger dining terrace creates a generous setting for entertaining. Rather than connecting the two with a conventional path, stepping stones lead through the planting, allowing the journey between the terraces to become part of the garden itself.

A separate courtyard terrace introduces another more enclosed space, while extensive formal lawns provide openness and structure against the abundance of the surrounding herbaceous planting.

The planting was designed by M T S Gardens to complement Charlotte's wider concept, using structure, repetition and seasonal interest to soften the new hard landscape and create a garden that would become increasingly settled around the Georgian architecture as it matured.

Extending the garden

Following completion of the rear garden, our attention moved to the front of the property, continuing the landscape language established elsewhere and creating a considered setting for the house from both sides.

A tree-lined pétanque court introduces a more informal recreational element, while the productive garden was conceived as a destination in its own right. A greenhouse and fruit cage sit within the vegetable garden, connected by self-binding gravel paths with restrained steel edging.

Together, these different spaces allow the garden to perform several roles — somewhere to entertain, somewhere to grow, somewhere to play and somewhere simply to enjoy the landscape.

Completing the landscape

The project was deliberately delivered over several stages. After completing the principal front and rear gardens, we returned the following year to construct the vegetable garden and complete the renovation of the driveway.

This phased approach allowed each part of the property to be considered as an element of the wider landscape rather than as an isolated project.

Our relationship with the garden has continued beyond construction. The M T S Gardens maintenance team now cares for and develops the landscape, managing the planting as it matures and making the considered interventions required to maintain the original design intent.

What began as a concept around a newly renovated house has become an established garden with many different purposes — connected by a consistent landscape language and continuing to develop with each season.
